Skip-the-line available How to get to Fortress Hohenwerfen from Salzburg
By car, train and as a day trip
Werfen sits about 40 kilometres south of Salzburg, making Hohenwerfen an easy half-day trip from the city. Here are your options.
By car
From Salzburg, take the A10 Tauern motorway south and leave at the Werfen exit — about 40 minutes in normal traffic. There is parking in the village near the fortress lift base station.
By train
Regional trains run from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Werfen station in around 45 minutes. From the station it is a walk of about 20 minutes to the lift base station, or you can take the footpath up to the fortress.
As a day trip
Allow half a day. A morning train or drive lets you catch the 11:15 flight show, tour the castle over lunchtime and be back in Salzburg by mid-afternoon. Pair it with the Eisriesenwelt ice caves nearby for a full day out.
