Season, opening hours and how to catch a flight show
Fortress Hohenwerfen is a seasonal attraction, and the single most important thing to know is that it closes for winter. Here is how to pick your day and your hour.
The season
Hohenwerfen opens from 1 April to 2 November 2026 and then closes for the winter. In April, October and November the fortress is closed on Mondays, except on public holidays. Outside these dates the fortress is not open to visitors, so always book a date within the season.
The quietest times
Mornings early in the season (April to June) and the shoulder weeks of October are the calmest. The busiest stretch is high summer, 20 July to 21 August, when opening hours extend to 18:00 and a third flight show is added. Arriving at opening time gives you the fortress at its most peaceful before the coach groups arrive.
Timing a flight show
The birds-of-prey demonstrations run at 11:15 and 15:15 every day, with extra 14:15 and 16:30 shows in high summer. Each lasts about 25 minutes. Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before a show so you can ride the lift or walk up, find the arena and settle in.
